PEARLAND, Texas (KTRK) -- Authorities say a crash is under investigation after it left one person dead and sent multiple people to the hospital in Pearland early on Thursday.

The Pearland Police Department said the single-vehicle crash happened just after 1 a.m. on the SH 288 toll road going southbound. At one point, an ABC13 crew spotted a vehicle that had flipped over on the ramp of the highway near McHard Road.

Chad Rogers, a spokesperson with Pearland PD, said that when officers arrived at the scene, they found four occupants who were trapped inside the car.

He said first responders were able to extract them from the vehicle. One person reportedly died at the scene, and three others were hospitalized, though their conditions haven't been released.

The outbound toll road was closed as of 3 a.m.

"There's extensive damage to the guard rail, and there's some road closures here because of that," Rogers added. "We're waiting on TxDOT and the crews to determine the structure of the guard rail that was collided with to figure out when we can reopen the road, but right now it's not safe based on what we can tell."
