Firefighters say lightning may be to blame for fire at Cinco Ranch home

KATY, Texas (KTRK) -- Fire officials said they believe a lightning strike may be to blame for a house fire Tuesday night in Cinco Ranch.

Authorities said the fire at the home on Mayfield Ridge Lane is one of four locations where crews received calls about possible lightning strikes in the Katy area.

The Willowfork Fire Department said no one was home at the time of the fire, but the flames consumed much of the attic, and three firefighters had to be treated for heat exhaustion.

Videos show the flames ripping through the roof of the home, which crews said took about two hours to get under control.

Multiple people at the scene told Eyewitness News they saw a lot of lightning earlier in the day.

"It had started raining, it was really dark. It started thundering. It got louder and louder, and we heard a few big booms, but we thought it was just thunder," a neighbor said.

The official cause of the fire is still under investigation, but given all the calls for lightning strikes in the area, officials are strongly looking at that as the possible culprit.
