Chase suspect shot to death by officer after firing shots at Seawolf Park in Galveston, police say

GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Galveston police say they will be conducting an internal affairs investigation after they say an officer shot and killed a chase suspect at a Galveston park on Thursday.

Investigators said that the incident happened at 4 a.m. Thursday as Hitchcock police tried to stop a man for a traffic violation. Law enforcement said that a chase began when the suspect fled in his vehicle onto Pelican Island and then ended at Seawolf Park.

Galveston police say that the suspect got out of his vehicle at the park and began firing shots.

They say then talked to the suspect for about 20 minutes, and he put his weapon into his waistband. At some point, police say that they trying to keep the suspect contained since there were fishermen and civilians in the park. Officers said that he began to walk away but then pointed his gun "in the direction of an officer." Authorities said that another officer fired one shot, hitting the suspect.

Officials said that the suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The suspect's name has not been released.
