According to Galveston Police Chief Doug Balli, a deputy with the Harris County Precinct 2 Constable's Office, spotted a stolen truck near Hobby Airport, and when he tried to stop it, the driver took off.
The suspect, identified only as a Hispanic man, sped down the Gulf Freeway toward Galveston as officers from additional agencies joined in.
"A Harris County Precinct 8 constable attempted to deploy spike strips during the encounter," Balli told reporters. "The suspect discharged a firearm at the deputy at which time, the deputy returned fire and continued to pursue into Galveston County."
The chase continued for more than 30 minutes, ending on Broadway near 54th Street on Galveston Island and shutting down the main thoroughfare for hours.
According to authorities, the armed driver got out of the truck on the passenger side and was shot and killed by law enforcement. Skyeye was over the scene shortly afterward. On the ground, patrol units and the suspect's truck were riddled with bullet holes.
"This is still an active investigation," Balli added, offering few details.
ABC13 has learned that the 2003 white Ford truck was stolen from a tire shop on Mulberry in Angleton Tuesday afternoon, 45 miles away from where a license plate camera clocked it nearly a day later. Sources say the suspect was on the phone as he was being pursued.
His identity has not been released, and the Texas Rangers are investigating the police shooting. No officers were hurt.
