Car plows into southeast Houston apartment unit day after family moves in

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston police are investigating after a man drove his truck into a southeast Houston apartment building on Sunday afternoon.

Investigators said six people were inside, and one was hurt and taken to the hospital. Luckily, the victim is expected to pull through.

Her aunt, Burgandy Corothers, said it was a terrifying situation, and the timing couldn't have been worse.

"We moved here from Willow Tree Apartments. The apartment we were in burnt down, and we were homeless for a couple of weeks until we were able to get into these Belfort apartments," Corothers said. "We just moved in, and today, the truck ran into the living room."

Resiliency is clearly a strong suit for Corothers, but her family did not come out unscathed this time around.

Her adult niece was sleeping in the living room at the time of the crash and got hit.

"I hurried and got up, ran in there, and saw her like that. I (have) never been through anything like this. I thought she was going to go because I didn't know how bad it was," Corothers said.

The driver claimed he lost control of his truck, according to Houston Police.

It appears he veered off the opposite side of the road, slammed through metal fencing, and stopped once he crashed into the building.

HPD said he stayed on scene and didn't show any signs of intoxication.

"All I can do is believe what they say, and I guess they interviewed him as well, but I am glad he is okay, and the car didn't blow up or anything because it could've been worse," Corothers said.

Carothers said that apartment management has offered to rehome them in another unit.

"I just want us to be somewhere stable and not have to deal with this. I know stuff happens. I am just glad everyone's okay," Corothers said.
