Bush Airport flight operations halted after unauthorized vehicle accesses service road: Officials

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- An investigation is underway after flight operations were temporarily suspended due to an unauthorized vehicle at George Bush Intercontinental Airport on Thursday.

Houston Airport System officials said just before 8 p.m., an unauthorized vehicle accessed a service road at a cargo area at Bush Airport.

According to the Houston Police Department, a female driver of the vehicle had followed a delivery vehicle through an unmanned gate at the airport.

The delivery driver informed the woman that she was not authorized to be in the restricted area, which led to a verbal argument, police said.

Police say that the woman drove away, and she was seen on camera exiting through the same gate.

Airport officials say that a security sweep was conducted, and officers were unable to find the woman's vehicle.

No one was hurt, and no damage was done to the airport, officials said.

The airport resumed to normal operations back at 9 p.m. Thursday, according to officials.

"I would really keep it to the authorities, and what's the right thing to do. I'm sure in this case, people don't want just to delay things for delaying. I trust the airport authorities on making some decisions on what's the right thing, even though it's an inconvenience for the customer," Suniel Bhambhani, a passenger, said.

"It's an inconvenience, but it's security as well. Something could have went wrong, and it would have been a bigger inconvenience for the public," Craig Buchan, a passenger, said.

The district attorney's office will decide whether any charges will be filed.

HPD is asking anyone who may have been the driver or who has information about the incident to contact the IAH Division at 281-230-6800.
