HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A boy is in critical condition after he was hit by a driver while riding his pony in northwest Harris County Friday night.

It happened on Spears Road near TC Jester. His father was on a horse close by when the pony stepped into the road and was struck by a car.

"I was outside watching TV and everything and all of a sudden, I hear a loud bang," said Anthony Dixon, whose house backs up to the crash scene. "They ride horses out here all the time around here."

Dixon said he saw a woman stop her car, get out and start performing CPR on the boy. Another neighbor told Eyewitness News he saw the boy's father frantic and crying. The boy and his father were returning to their horse stable close by.

"They need to put some kind of reflectors on some of the horses or something that it can make people see them better, or safety vest for the kids," said neighbor Hector Salazar.

The boy is in pediatric ICU at Memorial Herman Hospital. The pony was put to rest.

"It was a really horrible scene to see," said Dixon.

Charges have not been filed against the driver. Investigators have not released the name of that driver or the boy.
