BELLAIRE, Texas (KTRK) -- The City of Bellaire stated that public safety is unaffected and that an investigation is ongoing following the suspension of its police chief over an internal employment matter.

A city official confirmed to ABC13 on Monday that Chief Onesimo Lopez was placed on paid administrative leave during an internal investigation.

According to the city, the investigation was a standard step in internal reviews and had no impact on community services or public safety.

"The City of Bellaire is committed to a fair and thorough process," the city said.

The official did not comment on the specifics of Lopez's case but said the investigation was into an employment matter and did not imply wrongdoing.

Multiple sources told ABC13 the issue is connected to Chief Lopez reportedly contacting an outside agency to investigate some of his command staff.

ABC13 filed a records request with the city for Lopez's personnel documents, including any internal investigation files.

Once those are released, Eyewitness News hopes to get a clearer picture of what led up to his suspension.
