On Sunday afternoon, family members were working on the home in the 2000 block of CR 49, just east of Highway 288, when it collapsed, authorities say.
According to the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office, they got the call around 5 p.m. about the mobile home collapsing as several family members were trying to level it. Several of them were trapped underneath the house until first responders got there.
In video from SkyEye, you can see a hydraulic jack and broken cinderblocks around the home.
"They were trying to re-level a house and some of the cinder blocks broke and people are pinned under the beams," responders said over radio dispatch. "They are still going to be pinned underneath the house until we get the fire department out here. The house is still lying on them."
First responders were able to rescue five people from under the home. The sheriff's office says they had to break through the floor to get to some of them.
Four of those people were taken by Life Flight - a 15-year-old girl, a 16-year-old boy and a 38-year-old woman. We are told they are all stable.
Officials say a 15-year-old boy is in critical condition, and has been in and out of surgery Monday morning.
The sheriff's office says a 42-year-old man was also taken to the hospital. He has since been released.
A 31-year-old and a 17-year-old were killed. The 17-year-old was a student who had most recently attended Brazosport ISD.
"We are very saddened by this tragic loss of life. The student had just enrolled with us late last week, and only attended one day at our school. We were told that he was previously enrolled at Columbia-Brazoria ISD," Brazosport Independent School District officials stated in a release.
The spokesperson for the sheriff's office says the land was often flooded by nearby bayou, so it seems the family was trying to lift and raise the home when this all happened. Officials say they anticipate this was the tragic result of an equipment failure.
