HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A major crash involving one vehicle in northwest Harris County left one child dead Sunday evening, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a social media post that the crash happened in a construction zone at the 8700 block of West Little York Road, sending three people, including an 8-year-old child, to the hospital.

The 8-year-old was later pronounced dead at the hospital, officials said.

Major A. McConnell told ABC13 that the sheriff's office started receiving calls around 6:30 p.m. about a car that was driving eastbound and had entered a construction zone and rolled over, ejecting two passengers from the vehicle.

Major McConnell stated that preliminary information suggests that the driver may have been confused by a new traffic pattern that was recently changed in the area.

The other passenger, an adult man, is in critical condition, while the driver, a woman, is in stable condition and getting checked for signs of intoxication, McConnell said.

McConnell said that possible factors in the crash, like speeding or misplaced barrels blocking the barricade, will need to be determined by further investigation.

Major McConnell asked any witnesses to the crash to contact HCSO at 713-221-6000 with information.
