5 precinct maps will go before Fort Bend County commissioners in October for consideration

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- After four public hearings, the Fort Bend County Citizens Redistricting Advisory Committee has put forward five maps for county commissioners to consider. The maps, which divide the county's four precincts, impact which commissioners represent which neighborhoods.

Every 10 years, counties update their maps based on U.S. Census data. However, because of the county's population growth, state leaders asked the county to change maps.

In May, county commissioners started debating whether precinct maps approved in 2021 should stay in place.

Judge KP George said the current map was possibly illegal. He claimed he reviewed his comments from a meeting four years ago, where he said the county created a map based on race.

The county attorney, on the other hand, disagreed and said there are no legal challenges.

Still, some commissioners and the county judge approved creating a precinct map committee.

On Monday, the committee announced it's submitting the five maps to county commissioners for consideration.

Jacob Lee, the committee's chairman, told ABC 13 the idea behind the two most popular maps was to create partisan boundaries. He said that meant voters in a Democratic precinct would most likely be in a county commissioner precinct with a Democratic commissioner, and vice versa for a Republican precinct as well.

Ultimately, Lee said the maps don't tilt the balance, but ensure both parties are strong in their areas and voters get fair representation.

Commissioners will officially receive the maps on their Oct. 9 meeting.
