While officers said they responded to an urgent care clinic near the Gulf Freeway and Monroe Road on Friday afternoon, the actual location of the shooting was not immediately available.
HPD said they were initially told the boy was grazed by a bullet, but it was later determined he was shot in the chest and needed to go to a hospital right away.
According to investigators, the boy was brought to the clinic by his parents, and initial reports suggested the shooting was a result of negligent discharge.
Officers told Eyewitness News the boy was critically injured, but was expected to survive.
HPD said an investigation is underway.
