HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A 2-year-old girl is dead after authorities said she was hit while her brother was leaving a parking lot in southeast Houston on Saturday night.

According to the Houston Police Department, the incident happened just before 10 p.m. at an apartment complex on the 7900 block of Leonora.

Police said the family was unloading their groceries while the 2-year-old girl and another sibling were playing. During that time, the girl ran out into the parking lot. At the same time, the officer said the girl's older brother got into the vehicle and backed out, hitting her.

HPD said family members tried rendering aid to the young girl. She was taken to Texas Children's Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Police added they evaluated the driver, who is believed to be in his early 20s, and found he was not intoxicated. An investigation "suggests this was all a terrible incident," authorities said.
