HPD released surveillance video of the persons of interest, who are described only as two Black men.
According to HPD, officers responded to a robbery call at 2520 Calumet Street about 8:55 p.m. on Jan. 20, where they found the victim, 41-year-old James Tolen, dead from a gunshot wound.
Witnesses told detectives that the two armed suspects approached Tolen's vehicle and tried to rob him, police said. Both Tolen and his passenger complied with the suspects' demands and exited the vehicle, according to officials.
Police said that the suspects realized that the vehicle wouldn't start and approached Tolen for the car key. Law enforcement said that a physical altercation then occurred, where one of the suspects discharged his weapon, striking Tolen. Officials said that the suspects fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction.
Anyone with information on the identity of the persons of interest, or in this case, is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or speak anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
