HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- One person was killed following a major crash on the Gulf Freeway in Galveston County on Friday, according to police.

Houston TranStar reported the heavy truck crash at about 11:47 a.m. on I-45 South at 71st Street, blocking multiple southbound lanes as a result.

Galveston Police Department officers said three vehicles were involved in the wreck, including an SUV, a sports car, and a heavy truck. Investigators said initial information indicates that the industrial truck was speeding and caused the crash.

Police said that a young adult man who was in the sports car died after being taken to a nearby hospital. Several others, including two young children, were also injured and taken to the hospital, officials said, adding that their conditions are unknown at this time.

Officials said the Galveston County District Attorney's Office was at the scene to determine if the truck driver could face criminal charges.

In an update at about 3:10 p.m., TranStar reported that all lanes were reopened and the scene cleared.
