HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A woman and a toddler are dead after drowning in a pond in the Spring Lakes neighborhood of north Harris County, according to the sheriff's office.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said it was dispatched to the 900 block of Spring Lakes Haven Drive at around 6 p.m. on Sunday after reports of a drowning.

Investigators said that a 2-year-old child and a 74-year-old woman were rushed to the hospital, where they were both declared dead. Investigators initially said only one of them had died.

The sheriff's office said that a mother and her 2-year-old son were visiting the woman, their relative, who lived in the Spring Lakes neighborhood. The mother told investigators that her son got bored and that the woman took him for a walk to a neighborhood park.

Officials said that when the mother didn't hear from them and grew concerned, she went looking for them and found first responders performing life-saving measures on the woman. Shortly after, officials said the child was pulled from the water as well.

Deputies said that the mother did indicate that the child may have been autistic, but that a lot of questions still remain surrounding the tragedy.

Detectives said an investigation is underway.
