PEARLAND, TX (KTRK) -- When 9-year-old Marcus McGhee went missing Thanksgiving afternoon, Pearland quickly poured out its heart, volunteering in force to look for the little boy. His uncle, former NBA star Marcus Camby, is now thanking everyone for their support.

Residents, neighbors, friends and strangers searched for the little boy with autism, who was said to be anxious around loud noises and strangers, but loved the 'Wheels on the Bus.' Tragically, over the weekend McGhee was found dead in a retaining pond on the same property where he was visiting.

Today Camby issued the following statement: "My family and I would like to thank the Pearland police department, search and rescue and everyone from the community who assisted in the search for my nephew Marcus. Losing a child is every parent's worst nightmare and we are heartbroken.

While the outcome was tragic, the outpouring of support has truly touched us all. If, God forbid, something like this happens to another family in our community, my family will be front and center with assistance.

We respectfully request privacy as we deal with his devastating loss.

In memoriam, donations can be made to AutismSpeaks.org in the name of Marcus McGhee."
