Operation Stand Down helps Houston's veterans

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- More than 500 Houston veterans can rest a little easier thanks to a one-day event aimed at helping them.

For more than a decade, Operation Stand Down has been a day to connect mostly homeless veterans with the resources they need to get back on their feet.

But in the aftermath of Harvey, Operation Stand Down became Operation Stand Down Rebound, and they've given out everything from clothing to food.

Years ago, event volunteers helped Melvin Halsey find a place to live, healthcare and a job. He now works for the VA.

"Stand Down is very important to veterans being incarcerated. Plus, I have a mental illness - its hard to find resources that you need," Halsey said.
