The Department of Public Safety confirms that at least two African American men attacked the deputy at a convenience store on the 24200 block of Sorters Road on Saturday evening.

Both the deputy and his wife fired shots toward the suspects as they fled the scene. Police believe the suspects may have driven off in an early 2000s model red Chevy pickup truck.

It's not immediately clear if the suspects or their vehicle were struck by gunfire.
Investigators say the assault was caught on surveillance footage, which has not yet been released.
"Once the victim leaves the store, the suspect vehicle circles around and pulls up on the side street, where you can see them both exit the vehicle and assault the subject as he's putting ice in the bed of the truck," Lt. John Schmitt with Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said.

At this time, investigators do not believe the victim was targeted for being a law enforcement officer; he was not in uniform and he was driving a personal vehicle at the time of the attack.

The deputy has been taken to a hospital. He is said to have sustained facial injuries; his present condition is not known. His wife was not injured.
Investigators tell ABC13 that the deputy -- who has not yet been identified -- has been in law enforcement for 20 years.
