Firefighters acted quickly and were able to get the flames under control. Officials estimate that 15-20 horses were killed in the fire.
Three horses were transported with severe burns but were euthanized at the BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions.
"I guess one made it out to the street running on fire and died at the bayou," Noe Orozco said.
Orozco is one of the tenants at the neighborhood property known locally as the Linn Street Stables in Kashmere Gardens.
The fire and smoke spared his three horses.
"It is a loss of life because I'm pretty sure a lot of people's hearts are broken, shattered into pieces," he said.

HFD dispatched the Arson unit as a protocol to investigate the cause of the fire.
A public information officer with HFD said that they have not been able to contact the property owner as of Friday.
