Some new crystals are swapped in every year.

In 2017, the "Gift of Serenity" design was installed, which when finished looked like butterflies flying above a meadow.

The ball will be raised into place starting at 6:00 p.m. ET on New Year's Eve as more than one million revelers gather in Times Square.

Of course, the ball will be dropped at 11:59 p.m. - the last minute of the year - to officially ring in 2019 at midnight.

You can watch the festivities during Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest featuring an all-star line-up of performances from New York, Los Angeles and New Orleans starting at 8:00 p.m. ET | 7:00 p.m. CT on ABC-TV.
