Houston's musical contribution to hit film 'Moonlight'

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Since it's Oscar upset this weekend, "Moonlight" has turned into a blockbuster almost overnight sensation. While the stars of the film are getting massive attention, Houston musicians are also being recognized for their contributions.

Without a doubt, the film's soundtrack is very distinct, with a recognizably chopped and screwed treatment featuring dragged out, foggy sound first made famous by Houston's own DJ Screw.

Screw passed away in 2000, but fellow Bayou City natives OG Ron C and DJ Candlestick have carried on his sound. The didn't hesitate when director Barry Jenkins called with a request.

The pair said they felt like they had won an Oscar when the film one Best Picture after the now-infamous award mixup.

"It was just okay, we'll get em again, but when that happened, it was just like, 'Wow!'" said OG Ron C, also known as Ronald Coleman, "We were just happy that we were really a part of it."

He added that working on the film helped bring the chopped and screwed feeling to more people around the world.
