Police say he shot and killed a man Thursday night on Overbrook Lane in west Houston.
Stranton's lawyer says it was all in self-defense.
"He said to me the only reason he pulled that trigger is because that man started beating that woman unmercifully, and he kept beating that woman and beating that woman, and he felt that he was going to kill her," community activist Quanell X, who spoke on Stranton's behalf as he turned himself in, said.
Investigators said the 31-year-old victim was in and out of a relationship with a woman whom Stranton had been seeing.

"This was a love triangle with both men involved with the same woman, not knowing about each other. And it was an absolutely catastrophic situation that exploded when they both finally met up at her apartment at the same time," Quanell X said.
Police believe Stranton shot the boyfriend two to three times before running.
His lawyer says he panicked.
Now, they are waiting for all the details to come out in court.
"I would hope and pray that the lady involved in this, in the middle of this love triangle, will confess and tell the truth," Quanell X said.
