Metal impales vehicle and concrete barrier damaged after accident on Eastex Fwy at N. Loop

Our crews saw large chunks of concrete and a massive piece of metal that somehow crashed through the windshield of a vehicle
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- TxDOT officials are shutting down part of Eastex Freeway tonight until Monday after a major accident that caused damage to a concrete barrier and impaled a vehicle on the North Loop.

The bridge damage on Highway 59 caused major delays Friday morning.

SkyEye was over the scene on the Eastex Freeway northbound at 610 North Loop, where a large truck struck a bridge.

There were also big chunks of concrete on the ground, and a large piece of metal that crashed through the windshield of a vehicle at the scene. The pieces of concrete hit several other cars when it fell off the overpass.

The initial indication is the hydraulic lift on the dump truck may have malfunctioned or had some sort of issue, causing it to hit the ramp.

The large metal piece that impaled the vehicle's windshield could be the smoke stack from that dump truck, but that is only speculation as of this point.

It's unclear if the truck driver will be charged with anything, but we do know that no one was injured.

Meanwhile, TxDOT officials have placed a temporary barrier as they repair the damaged wall on the North Loop.

Starting at 9 p.m., officials will close Eastex Freeway northbound for those repairs.
