HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The movie "La La Land" is a musical that took home seven Oscars at the Academy Awards.

The story tells the tale of two struggling artists living in Los Angeles, California, who 'dance' their way through life as they pursue their Hollywood dreams.

Mandy Moore, the choreographer of the film, said she hopes that the film inspires younger dancers as well as makes ballroom dance more accessible.

Fred Astaire movies were part of the Moore's inspiration for the choreography found in the film.

Our own Chauncy Glover and Mayra Moreno visited the Fred Astaire studio in River Oaks to see if they could pick up a few of their own "La La Land" moves.

Dance instructor Alex Armaos said there's been an increase of younger dancers walking in through his doors.

"From 'Dancing with the Stars' or especially 'La La Land', they find it very romantic so we see a lot of new couples coming in," said Armaos.

Susan Curling is both a doctor and dance student at the studio. For Curling, dancing is not only a stress reliever, but has also helped her lose 40 pounds since she started dancing six years ago.

"It's good for your spirit, your soul. It gives you a different way of expressing yourself," Curling said.

As Chauncy and Mayra gave it a whirl on the ballroom dance floor, Armaos left them with just one rule of ballroom dance.

"Just be yourself and be able to have fun and mistakes will happen, that's part of learning. So, really just enjoy and laugh at your mistakes."
