HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man in west Houston is issuing a warning after he says an owl killed his Chihuahua.

When Travis Payne let his dog named Chloe out into the yard in the middle of the afternoon, he couldn't have imagined it would end in tragedy.

"We worried about hawks and I always checked the tree tops before I let her out, " said Payne. "I never expected it would be an owl and I never expected it would be in the middle of the day."

He dashed towards the owl, but it was too late to save Chloe.

"She was very sweet and dear to us. Our house seems empty without her," said Payne.

After researching online, he learned that the owl he spotted was a Great Horned Owl. Great Horned Owls live in oak trees and are known to hunt small animals like skunks and rats.

Payne's sister posted about the attack on Nextdoor to warn other pet owners.
