Good Samaritan hit with hammer trying to stop jewelry store robbers in The Woodlands Mall

THE WOODLANDS, TX (KTRK) -- A Good Samaritan who tried to stop a jewelry thief was hit in the face with a hammer, and the suspects are on the run.

Good samaritan struck in face with hammer in Woodlands Mall jewelry theft

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office told Eyewitness News the crooks stormed the Helzberg Diamonds store just before 11 am.

The jewelry shop is located inside The Woodlands Mall near the food court.

Detectives said one man tried to spray paint over a security camera while the other smashed into glass cases. They hauled away around $75,000 worth of jewelry.

Captain Bryan Carlisle with MCSO said a witness tried to stop the criminals.



One suspect then hit the man right on the bridge of his nose with a hammer. Both thieves took off in a red Toyota RAV4. They abandoned the vehicle near the North Freeway.

Carlisle said it was a rental out of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Paramedics took the injured man to a local hospital. We're told he was alert and conscious.

Students were being kept inside and doors locked at Oakridge Elementary School, Oakridge High School, Oakridge 9th grade campus and Houser Elementary School as precaution during the police activity.

The search has been suspended and schools were given the all-clear.

No other injuries have been reported.
