Worst storms in Houston's history


HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The Texas Gulf Coast is no stranger to severe storms and tropical weather.

Here's a list of the worst storms to hit Texas:

The 1900 Storm - Galveston, Texas
  • Labeled the deadliest hurricane in U.S. history
  • The category 4 storm came with little warning
  • The storm killed 6,000 people and left 10,000 homeless
  • The storm led to the creation of the Galveston Seawall

The 1915 Storm - Galveston, Texas
  • The first test of Galveston's new Seawall
  • 11 people died in the storm
  • The island flooded, and the storm brought 145 mph winds
  • The storm caused $50 million in damages


Hurricane Carla - Port Lavaca, Texas
  • The category 4 storm made landfall near Port O'Connor, Texas in 1961
  • Carla killed 35 people in Texas and destroyed 1,915 homes
  • Carla also spawned a tornado in Channelview, causing $200,000 in damages

Hurricane Alicia - Galveston, Texas
  • Alicia struck Galveston and traveled up I-45 to Houston in 1983
  • Hurricane Alicia killed 21 people and caused $1.7 billion in damages
  • 115 mph winds were recorded at landfall when Alicia hit


Tropical Storm Allison - Houston, Texas
  • 23 people were killed in Texas during Allison in 2001
  • 70,000 Houston area homes were damaged or destroyed
  • The storm caused $5 billion in damages


Hurricane Ike - Galveston, Texas
  • At least 100 people died along the Bolivar Peninsula in 2008
  • Hurricane Ike caused nearly $30 billion in damages
  • Ike hit Texas as a category 2 hurricane

  • 103 people died in Texas due to storm-related incidents in 2017
  • Parts of Houston recorded more than 30 inches of rain
  • Nederland, Texas had 60 inches of rain
