The district, Texas' largest, was hit especially hard by Harvey. Most schools had to delay their first day of classes by two weeks while the district worked feverishly to clean up damaged campuses, and several of the more badly damaged schools remain closed.
Community members came out in full force to several of the district's donation drives that benefitted staff and students who were displaced by the storm. School workers also served free meals to the community as cleanup efforts got underway in early September.
"You have done so much and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for opening your hearts. Together, we are Houston strong!" Carranza said.
