HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston Independent School District teamed up with a nonprofit to distribute thousands of pairs of shoes to Hurricane Harvey flood victims.

Samaritan's Feet donated 10,000 pairs of its World Shoe to HISD students and others sheltered at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Designed with developing nations in mind, the World Shoe has an active anti-microbial agent that protects feet from injury and infection and can even treat pre-existing infections, according to Samaritan's Feet.

Founder Manny Ohonme hoped the shoes would prove useful for those working to clean up flood-damaged homes and neighborhoods.

"Seeing our brothers and sisters hurting here in Houston, we felt like we had to do something," Ohonme said.

Samaritans Feet is taking donations on its website to provide another 10,000 pairs of shoes to Harvey victims.
