New York BBQ joint brings taste of Texas to Big Apple

NEW YORK (KTRK) -- Around the corner from Manhattan's busy 5th Avenue, a slower pace worthy of the Hill Country and barbecue so good, even Yankee fans love it.

There is Shiner on tap. Deep Eddy Vodka is in the bottle. Kruez sausage is on the menu. The rest of the food at Hill Country Barbecue Marke is prepared here.

It's Texas dry rub barbecue and all the fixins', found in the Flatiron District.

"You can get a taste of home," Hill Country Live Music Director Seth Rothschild said

The owner spent summers and holidays in Lockhart near Austin, and wanted to celebrate that.

"He has such a fond nostalgic remembrance of the food, the culture, the hospitality, he wanted to bring it to New York," Rothschild said.

Barbecue joints are still rare in New York. Market-style ordering is even rarer. Walking in, it smells like home.

"When I walked in and took a whiff, it made me smile," customer Frankie Williams said.

Tuesday afternoon, the Astros will be on the screens. They are the only baseball team in Texas still alive, and we like what Rothschild, a New Yorker from Philly is predicting.

"I'm rooting for the Astros. I've predicted them winning the World Series in seven games against the Dodgers for the last three months," Rothschild says. "It doesn't take rocket scientists to see that's probably likely."
