As paramedics responded to the accident involving the couple who were in separate cars, the ambulance was hit from behind by a Toyota Corolla.
According to a spokesperson with the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, the car was driven by Fr. Frederico Ablog, a religious order priest assigned to St. Augustine Church.
Ablog was in serious condition when he was sent by LifeFlight to the hospital. He is now out of surgery.

"There was already a police car on the scene, so I don't know if he went around the police car to hit the ambulance or what the situation was with that but it looks like he was going freeway speeds because it was a pretty severe accident," said Sgt. JT Hall with the Houston Police Department.
The ambulance ended up hitting the guard rail and then slammed into one of the cars in the original crash.
Fortunately, the two paramedics were not injured. They were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
