What you need to know before visiting Galveston beaches when they reopen today

GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) -- As we slowly get back to normal, Galveston is opening beaches on a limited basis starting Monday morning.

The beaches will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. daily for pedestrians, joggers and surfers.

Cars, beach towels, chairs, tents, picnics and umbrellas are not allowed.

Beaches will remain closed during all other hours.

Violators could face a $500 fine.

Things could close down again if the Texas General Land Office rejects the plan.

The Galveston City Council vote to open the beaches on a limited basis last Thursday was close. Some elected officials wanted to wait until they hear more from Governor Greg Abbott.

Abbott is scheduled to announce more details on his plan to reopen the state Monday afternoon.
