GALVESTON ISLAND, TX (KTRK) -- Did you know that planting trees on your property could actually help conserve power and reduce energy costs?

The Galveston Island Tree Conservancy has donated 700 trees that will be distributed free of cost to Galveston Island residents hoping to take a stand for energy conservation.

Beginning on Dec. 5, residents can reserve their red maple, tulip and redbud trees online at arborday.org/galveston or over the phone by calling 855-234-3801. Residents can reserve up to two trees per home.

An online tool will help customers determine the most strategic location to plant their trees in order to maximize energy savings.

The trees are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and will be delivered "at an ideal time for planting," the Conservancy said.
