NEEDVILLE, Texas (KTRK) -- The traditional Pomp and Circumstance at this community's high school graduation was different this year.

Seniors received their diplomas Friday, amid tears of joy and sorrow as the daughter of Caleb Rule was among those being celebrated.

"It's terribly sad for them and their family, and for all of us because we all care for them so much," said a high school staff member.

About 20 officers lined the football field sidelines to cheer her on, standing in for a father who wasn't there.

Rule died early Friday in what authorities are calling a tragic accidental shooting during a break-in call.

The 37-year-old law enforcement veteran was married with four children and had been with the Fort Bend County Precinct 4 Constable's Office for nine months. Prior to that, he was a detective and a 14-year veteran of the Missouri City Police Department.
