Minnesota sends SPAM to Texas for Hurricane Harvey victims

Friday, September 8, 2017
AUSTIN, Minnesota (KTRK) -- Another shipment of flood recovery supplies is headed to Texas from Minnesota, but it wasn't the typical shipment of water.

Lakeville pilot Louis Olsen has a passion for flying and giving back.

"They woke up with nothing. That's why I'm doing it," Olsen said.

Olsen planned a relief mission to Texas and his flight plan included a SPAM stop.

"The SPAM will last and they can move it into areas and they don't have to worry about it going bad," Olsen said.

Olsen said he's raised about $1,500 just from his golfing friends and people that he knew. He called Hormel and told them he wanted to pay for it, but they donated it instead.

"As a food company, we're really inspired to help others and use our protein products to help feed the hungry and those in need when disaster strikes," Hormel spokeswoman Kelly Braaten said.

They donated 32 cases of SPAM, which is more than 300 cans.
