Invite to swim streets of downtown Houston goes viral

Saturday, August 26, 2017
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- While the Houston area is in the early stages of an expected deluge from Harvey, a Facebook event is spreading in the city, inviting people to swim the flooded streets of downtown.

The public event titled "Going for a swim in the streets of downtown Houston" has drawn more than 2,000 RSVPs and interest from more than 5,500 users since it first posted Friday night.

The location of the event is listed for Main Street Square, and the details are simple enough: "Just takin a dip."

We reached out to the listed host of the event, Manny Rivera, who said the invite was to be taken as a joke. Still, he was surprised by the large feedback.

"It's just a joke I made to cheer people up, but I honestly didn't expect so many people sharing and saying they were going!" Rivera said.

Like almost everyone in the city, he is monitoring the weather.

"There might be time to go downtown for a quick swim haha," said Rivera jokingly.

Whatever the case, joke or no joke, dangers lurk in flood water.
