BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Deputies are investigating after a Houston Fire Department captain and his girlfriend were found dead inside of a home near Rosharon.

"It's a terrible family tragedy. We have two families. One has lost a daughter. The other has lost a son, and it's heartbreaking," said Houston Fire Chief Sam Pena.

According to the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office, deputies did a welfare check at a home located in the Cold River Ranch neighborhood after Briana Warren's family suspected she may be in danger.

The family believes Warren was killed in a murder-suicide, but deputies are still working to confirm that information.

When deputies arrived at the home and knocked on the door, they heard a toddler crying inside.

When deputies couldn't contact an adult, they opened the door and found HFD captain Joe Robinson and Warren dead, and the toddler crying. The toddler was not injured.

Deputies said they did recover a weapon from the residence, but they did not say how Robinson and Warren died.

Full statement from the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association regarding the incident:

"Houston firefighters are stunned by the deaths of Joe Robinson and Briana Warren. We extend condolences to their families and friends and to the B-shift crew at HFD Station 48. Joe served the city for more than 15 years before this tragedy. This is a terribly sad, but urgent reminder that we should watch out for and take care of our family members and friends in distress. Whether for line-of-duty behavioral health issues or other life challenges, help is available - no matter what. Please keep the Robinson and Warren families and everyone affected by their tragic deaths in your thoughts and prayers."
