Officials want some Wharton Co. residents to leave at daybreak

WHARTON COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Wharton County Sheriff Shanon Srubar says residents in Orchard and Peach Creek Acres should be ready to evacuate at sunrise, but not anytime before that.

Road closures across the county would make leaving in the dark unsafe, he told Eyewitness News.

Major flooding is expected for these areas as the Colorado River is coming up more swiftly than ever seen before, Srubar said.

The town of Wharton is marooned as high water is coming up around Highway 59.

Officials said a hotel in the city is now taking on water as the Colorado River swells.

The river is now 11 feet over its banks, a major flooding event, according to the Wharton County Office of Emergency Management.
