A survey put together by the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy found that seven percent of adults believe chocolate milk comes from brown cows!
The Washington Post crunched the numbers and found that works out to about 16.4 million people who are agriculturally illiterate.
The equivalent of the population of Pennsylvania does not know that chocolate milk is milk, cocoa and sugar.
Perhaps worse? The survey found 48 percent of those asked, admitted they weren't totally sure where chocolate milk came from.
Educators are quick to caution that these conclusions don't apply across the board. Studies have shown that people with higher education levels and incomes tend to know a bit more about where their food comes from.
The online survey polled 1,000 American adults over a five-day period in May. It kicked off the center's "Undeniably Dairy" campaign, which promotes healthy dairy products and farms.
