HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A man with a history of domestic violence against his ex-wife led police on a high-speed chase before he was taken into custody in west Harris County on Thursday morning.

ABC13 sources identified the man as 59-year-old Errol Kelly.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said the standoff happened after 8 a.m. in the 1300 block of Westgreen, just off the Katy Freeway.

HCSO Assistant Chief Tommy Diaz said deputies initially responded to a different location involving a terroristic threat against the suspect's ex-wife.

The suspect allegedly took out a gun there and threatened his ex-wife's life before deputies could arrive.

Diaz said deputies then searched the area for Kelly's car and found him in a Walmart parking lot.

When attempting to make a traffic stop, Kelly reportedly took off, triggering a brief chase.

"At that point, he also displayed a weapon, and our deputies pursued the vehicle to here at Westgreen and I-10," Diaz said.

The assistant chief added the suspect crashed into a water main, impacting two nearby businesses, took out a gun again, and pointed it at deputies.

One deputy reportedly fired at the suspect in the vehicle, but he was not hit. Officials said tactical teams were then called to try to get the suspect to surrender.

"He refused to talk to us. He was threatening, yelling obscenities and things of that nature," Diaz said.

The suspect allegedly took out his weapon once again and pointed it at deputies, who then fired.

A witness told ABC13 he heard about 10 to 20 gunshots.

Kelly was barricaded inside his car for about 20 minutes before he got out and was taken into custody.

He and his ex-wife divorced this year and have had a history of ongoing issues, according to records.

Kelly had a warrant out for his arrest for making a terroristic threat against his ex-wife.

According to records, on Sept. 30, his ex-wife told deputies her house was set on fire, believing her ex-husband was behind it. She said he was upset about pictures on Facebook of her going out with friends. According to court documents, she recorded a phone call with Kelly who told her he was going to "kill her and burn her."

Diaz said family violence makes up about a third of murders in Harris County.

According to HCSO, there have been 86 homicides so far this year, with 16 of them domestic violence-related.

"In addition, that is one of our primary calls for service we respond to," Diaz said.

Fortunately, this time, deputies said Kelly's ex-wife is safe and did not become part of their troubling statistics.
