At around 4 p.m., officials found the male suspect and tried to detain him. The suspect pulled out a handgun, and officials shot him at least once in the chest.
The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS.
Johnisha Hogan was looking for a parking spot when the madness began to unfold.
From her car, Hogan said that she saw two officers approach the suspect, who was walking back to his car with a pack of beer.
"He put the pack of beer on his car, and as the police officers were approaching him, he took off and ran. Officers just kept saying stop," Hogan said.
Hogan said the suspect couldn't run far from police given how congested the parking lot was. She says he ultimately positioned himself between two cars.
"He pulled his gun out, and that is when the two officers were backing up trying to tell him to put it down, and then next thing, we knew the gun shots were fired," Hogan said.
Hogan says everyone scrambled just before the first shot went off. She says she heard six gunshots total.
"At that point, I am thinking...what led up to this," Hogan said.
At the time, she didn't know the suspect was wanted by police for car theft.
The stolen car was still in the parking lot when ABC13 got on scene.
"No injuries from the carjacking victim that he believed the suspect produced a firearm, but he said it was covered by a shirt, so he didn't visibly see it," Captain Harold Lee of the League City Police Department said.
