Study: Airlines are getting better at not losing your baggage

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KTRK) -- Airlines are getting better at getting you and your bags to your destination, a new government study reveals.

According to the latest edition of the Air Travel Consumer Report, reporting airlines canceled only 0.29 percent of scheduled domestic flights in November 2016, the lowest cancellation rate since record-keeping began in January 1995.

Instances of mishandled baggage are on the decline, with only 2.02 reports for every 1,000 passengers in November 2016, the lowest rate since reporting began in 1987.

On-time arrivals are increasingly common, with 86.5 percent of flights arriving on time, a 1 percent increase from the month before. Hawaiian, Delta, Alaska, Frontier and Spirit are the top five airlines with the most on-time arrivals; more than 90% of Hawaiian and Delta's flights arrived on time.

For purposes of the report, the federal government considers a flight on time if it arrives within 14 minutes of its scheduled arrival time.

The study examines both reports filed by a dozen major U.S. airlines with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and complaints filed by passengers. The full report is available on the Department of Transportation website.
