Woman accidentally shot and killed her caretaker, Deborah Wrigley reports.

TODD MISSION, Texs (KTRK) -- A 76-year-old Grimes County woman shot and killed her caretaker Wednesday evening, according to investigators. She told them she had mistaken him for an intruder.

It happened at her home in the Todd Mission area near Plantersville. The name of the woman who is not released by the sheriffs office, which is still investigating the shooting.

Samual Gene Wilson, 60, had served as her caretaker for at least five years, and lived at the home. Deputies described the woman as frail and needing assistance to move.

Authorities said she called 911 after the shooting to report that she had shot an intruder, but then realized that she had mistaken Wilson for someone who meant her harm.

"She was very despondent and upset," said an investigator, who called it a tragedy.

The death is being investigated as a homicide by the sheriff's office and Texas Rangers.

The case will eventually be given to a grand jury for consideration.
