METRO rail green and purple lines open with big celebration

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- We're less than two days away from the highly anticipated opening of the METRO green and purple rail lines, which will take the current rail system from seven miles to 22.

The green rail will run on the east side from the Theater District with stops EADO and at the BBVA Compass Stadium The purple rail line will run on the southeast end from the Theater District over to Texas Southern University and University of Houston.

"We know these next extensions are going to be wildly successful because it's the first time we're going into the neighborhoods," said METRO Chairman Gilberto Garcia. "So now people in the neighborhoods can go to their doctors, to sporting events and they can really start having mobility choices and transit freedom, and that's what it's all about."

Not only will rides on the lines be free on Saturday, but METRO plans to celebrate the grand opening with METRO-fest at BBVA Compass Stadium. There, multiple music acts will perform, including Grammy-winner Ne-Yo.
