HOUSTON (KTRK) -- One person is in custody after what police say was a deadly hit-and-run wreck in north Houston Monday afternoon.

It happened near the intersection of Aldine Bender and Imperial Valley and involved four vehicles, including an Aldine ISD school bus.

Authorities say 36-year-old Huego Avila was driving his white Station Wagon southbound on Imperial Valley when the driver of a silver Taurus headed westbound on Aldine Bender ran the red light, smashing right into the father. Avila died instantly.

"He was a regular guy. He wasn't a bad guy, never in problems and was a good dad," Avila's brother-in-law Mario Maradiaga said.

Avila was headed to pick up his seven-year-old son from school Monday evening.

"He knows his dad was in an accident. He was waiting for him and saw the helicopters and he was like something happened to my dad. I was like, 'He's fine.' I can't tell him," Maradiaga said.

Now that little boy has to learn to live without his father.

Police believe the other driver may have been drunk.

"He is showing some signs of intoxication at this point. Here we go again. People drinking and driving out here and somebody had to die again," said Sgt. R. Dukes Jr. with the Houston Police Department.

No children were on the school bus, and no one else was injured in the wreck.

He fled the scene on foot but was later caught and arrested. His identity has not yet been released, but we're told he'll be charged.
