ATASCOCITA, TX -- Many refer to the "thin blue line" when they speak of support for law enforcement but Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland states that it is more like a "thick blue fabric."

"A line is like a divider; there's people on one side and people on the other," McClelland said. "I believe that peace officers in our society are like a thick blue fabric, holding this country and our communities together. Our peace officers and first responders are the first protectors of the United States Constitution.

"Throughout my career, I have never been in a situation or scenario when the first responder says, 'it's too dangerous,' or 'I don't want to do this.' Instead, they say, 'I'm going to go in and I might not make it out, tell my family I love them.' They are dedicated to their service and their community."

McClelland had the chance to speak to guests at the annual Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce's 2015 Peace Officers and Firefighters of the Year Luncheon March 24.
