How Hurricane Harvey created a Christmas to remember
DICKINSON, Texas (KTRK) -- Four months after Hurricane Harvey ripped through Dickinson, people are still finding a way to enjoy Christmas.
The joy of the day could be found at Rhea Garcia-Creekmore's home.
"We just decorated as best we could with what we had and made the most of it, and it turned out great," Garcia-Creekmore said.
The family transformed a bedroom into a winter wonderland. But it's only a fantasy to their reality.
The rest of their home is to the studs, and it'll take months to rebuild.
"You can either choose to sit around and be sad all the time, and I frankly don't have time for that," Garcia-Creekmore said.
Although they aren't living in their house, they're still on their property.
The family of six is living in two travel trailers provided by FEMA.
"It's been taking some getting used to," Garcia-Creekmore said. "It has been an adventure. It has been a blessing."
They aren't alone. So far, FEMA says more than 800 families impacted by Harvey have moved into trailers or mobile homes in time for the holidays.
It's a key component for helping Texans not only rebuild, but enjoy the holiday with loved ones.
"It was a double-edged sword," Garcia-Creekmore said.
On one hand, they've lost so much. But on the other, they've turned life's worst moments into their biggest blessings.
"I think that this is probably going to be one of my favorite Christmases," Garcia-Creekmore said.
