How to slash your Thanksgiving dinner grocery budget
If you want to save big money on Thanksgiving dinner, dollar stores are a best bet.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- When it comes to groceries for your Thanksgiving feast, one store is taking the holiday bundt cake for savings.

If you haven't considered shopping at dollar stores like the 99 Cents Only Stores, you might want to take a second look. The more you save, the more money you'll have left behind for other treats this holiday.

Today we met Andrea McGown, who said there is a method to her grocery madness.

"Oh yes, I compare first," McGown said. "I have to make my money work for me."

While McGown was at the 99 Cents Only Store to shop for sweet potatoes and a few other items, she said she was needing to buy food for 30 or 40 people this Thanksgiving.

With a crowd like that coming for dinner, grocery bills could quickly climb. So we grabbed a cart and comparison shopped the goods between this store and an area Randalls.

Here is what we bought:

The verdict: We saved $6.65 on 12 items. That's money that can go straight back into your pocketbook.

McGown said with savings like these, it would be worth the effort to drive across town for groceries this holiday season.
