Montgomery County Fairgrounds being used to shelter animals of Hurricane Harvey

CONROE, Texas (KTRK) -- From horses and cows, to dogs and rabbits, the Montgomery County Fairgrounds is now home to all of them as it serves as a shelter following Hurricane Harvey.

There are more than 800 dogs and cats that have survived Hurricane Harvey that were taken to the fairgrounds, and those animals are from across Texas.

They have been split up into three categories:

• Dogs and cats rescued from the streets

• Animals evacuated from shelters

• Animals that belong to those who are in Red Cross shelters in this area

There has been an outpouring of support from the community with people donating pet food, crates and blankets, and many volunteers and supplies are still needed.

For those animals that were lost, there have been some tearful reunions.

"Because there's been so much dislocation, many of them have been to other shelters already looking desperately. When they come in, we are able to identify their dog or cat is here, the relief and exuberation on the part of the dogs, the whole thing is part of why we are doing this," said Judah Battista with Best Friends Animal Society.

There is a reunion center being established at NRG to move some animals. They will not adopt them out for another 30 days or so to give owners a chance to claim their lost animals.
